Pro-what?
Professor Ibram X. Kendi’s book, “How to be an Antiracist,” has popularized the word, which can be found in most independent schools’ communications after a racially turbulent summer. Combined with “anti-bias,” schools have publicly declared what they are against.
What then are the characteristics that we want to elevate?
Pro-authenticity: We are a school that values our community member’s individual and authentic self. We want them to bring their full personhood each day to our campus and commit to creating and sustaining an environment that supports them wholly.
Pro-feedback: We are a school that values the voices and experiences of all our community members, centering those who are currently marginalized. We commit to both ask about and listen to our constituents’ needs.
Pro-accountability: We are a school that values our responsibility to our community members to provide an equitable growing environment. We commit to use data and feedback to understand the lived experience of our members and make adjustments to our protocols, procedures, and policies that better meets our needs.
