What Computers Can Teach Us About White Supremacy

A colleague, worried that their recently slow, non-responsive computer was going to crash, called for IT support. IT saved their files and reminded the owner that the culprit were the various programs that were running in the background, many of which happen automatically.

White supremacy is the computer program in the background for our country.

This corrupted file is joined by patriarchy, racism, white rage, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, violence, hate and all of their relatives that oppress and marginalize.

As our country slows, we must call on those that understand these oppressions and marginalizations to lead us toward liberation. We must center Black, women, queer, trans, working class poor, non-Judeo-Christian, etc. voices and follow their lead.

As Cam’ron, rapper, reminds us that “…computers put’in’,” we can no longer pretend that our country is not working properly. It produces, elevates, and sustains white supremacy as it is programmed to do. This program no longer serves us and we must do something differently to change the outcome.
